The European Commission has supported the continent-wide fight against rinderpest, through the Pan African Rinderpest Campaign (PARC). This project has had considerable success and The Gambia has been declared provisionally free from rinderpest. The PARC project, however, was discontinued in The Gambia in 1994 and the country therefore did not benefit from the second and third phases of the project. The European Union and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) have developed a new programme, the Pan African Programme for the Control of Epizootics (PACE). The PACE Programme will build on the achievements of PARC to finally eradicate rinderpest and to set up a Pan African network for the control of epizootics and the necessary means to develop this tool.
