Fisheries and aquaculture sectors in Africa provide millions of Africans with affordable nutritious food and livelihoods. Still, according to FAO prospective study, average per capita fish consumption in Africa is likely to decrease from 10 to 8.3 kg by 2030. On top of demographic trends and global competition for food, other reasons may explain this situation such as poor governance, degradation of ecosystems aggravated by climate change, lack of productivity and competitiveness etc. In 2014, African Union leaders adopted the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy (PFRS) for Fisheries and Aquaculture that provide strategic guidance for the development of these sectors in Africa. As a follow up of First phase of Fisheries Governance project (FishGov 1), this Action’s overall objective is to enhance the contribution of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to the achievement of the AU Agenda 2063’s objectives, notably in terms of food security, livelihoods and wealth creation. Taking into account lessons learnt from FishGov 1 and contextual changes, this Action will address 3 strategic issues where collaboration with AU institutions will provide additional value and will complement EU Action at regional and national levels.en
