Abstract
Agriculture and agribusiness play an important role in Zambian economy, contributing around 20 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in recent years and about 12 percent of national export earnings. Agriculture employs nearly 70 percent of the labour and remains the main source of income and employment for most of the people living in the rural areas. The Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) is Africa’s policy framework for agricultural transformation, wealth creation, food and nutritional security, and economic growth. At the launch of the CAADP in Malabo, AU-Heads of State committed themselves to reducing levels of poverty, ending hunger on the continent and tripling intra-African trade in agricultural goods, among others by 2025.
