<description>31st Reunion Meeting; Publication No. 126; Bamako - Mali; International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC) 12-16 September 2011
AU-IBAR
The 31st International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control General Conference was held at the Centre International De Conference De Bamako (CICB), Bamako, Mali as from 12th-16th September 2011. The theme of the Conference was ‘Refocusing Research and Control of Tsetse and Trypanosomiais: A Development Agenda’. The Conference was officially opened by the Prime Minister and Head of Government, Her Excellency Mme Cisse Mariam Kaidama Sidibe. The opening Ceremony &#13;
was also graced by the Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Hon Dr. Bokary Treta, Representative of the World Health Organisation in Mali, Madame Diallo Faoumata Binta Tidiane, Director of AU-PANVAC, Dr. Karim Tounkara, representing the Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, African Union Commission, Madame Rhoda Peace Tumusiime, Director of AU-IBAR, Prof. Ahmed Elsawalhy among other dignitaries. In her speech, the Prime Minister urged scientists to bring research to the doorstep of the rural poor who bear the scourge of tsetse and trypanosomiasis. The Director of AU IBAR, Dr Ahmed El-Sawalhy, complemented the call of the Prime Minister, by reiterating the commitment of AU-IBAR to removing the tsetse and trypanosomiasis burden from the African Continent.
The Conference observed that significant progress had been made in the area of Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis field interventions and that there was a general trend and desire by countries to operate within the framework of the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC). A major issue of concern was how to use research methods and tools for the collection of good quality baseline data for the planning of control/eradication programmes. The conference also noted that even though progress has been made in the implementation of the PATTEC projects there was not sufficient quantification of the benefits derived in transforming livelihoods.

<description>The International Scientific Council for Trypanosomosis Research and Control holds it’s 34th Conference to review and recommend control approaches for sleeping sickness and Nagana Livingstone - Zambia 11th September 2017
AU-IBAR
To address sleeping sickness, Nagana (trypanosomiasis in cattle) and the vector that transmits the diseases, stakeholders comprising disease control workers and scientists from AU Members States, researchers and scientists from universities in Africa and other parts of the world and other organisation working on the disease in human and animals and the tsetse fly are meeting in Livingstone - Zambia to promote information sharing on the problem of tsetse, human and animal trypanosomiasis, review &#13;
control strategies and recommend appropriate approaches in research and control.
The threat that tsetse and trypanosomiasis (T&amp;T) pose was recognized at the turn of the 20th century by &#13;
the African Heads of State and Governments when, at their meeting in Lome in 2000, drew attention to the seriousness of the T&amp;T problem as one of Africa’s greatest constraints to socio-economic development, that severely affects human and livestock health, limits land use, cause poverty and perpetuates underdevelopment on the continent.

<title>32nd International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control Conference ISCTRC Reports &amp; Recommendations; Khartoum, Sudan 8 - 12 September 2013</title>

<description>32nd International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control Conference ISCTRC Reports &amp; Recommendations; Khartoum, Sudan 8 - 12 September 2013
AU-IBAR
The African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) is at the forefront of reducing the impact of transboundary animal diseases and zoonoses on livelihoods and public health in Africa. The prevention, control and eradication of the diseases is achieved through specific networks, platforms and projects within the framework of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme.
Trypanosomiasis severely affects human and livestock health, limits land use thus causing poverty and perpetuating underdevelopment on the continent. The impact of the disease extends over 36 countries and an estimated 10 million sq. km (a third of the continent) of land area. The International Scientific Council for Trypanosomiasis Research and Control (ISCTRC) was established in the 60s on the realization that the removal of tsetse and trypanosomiasis required an international organization that would serve as a vehicle of cooperation and implementation across national, regional and continental barriers. ISCTRC is a statutory council of the African Union with the secretariat at AU-IBAR and is managed by an Executive Committee. It has continued to act as a platform for knowledge sharing and information dissemination on trypanosomiasis research and control.
