<summary type="text">Market Insight Note: Livestock Market Systems Development in Kenya
AU-IBAR
Kenya’s livestock is a major yet under-capitalised economic pillar, contributing to 12% of national GDP, nearly 40% agricultural GDP and supports an estimate of 25 million people in employment. Despite its scale, the sector continues to attract significantly less private investment than horticulture, tea and dairy subsectors that have structured markets, strong cooperative systems and predictable pricing. The African Pastoral Markets Development (APMD) platform revealed the growing appetite for structured engagement, with over USD 2 million in forward contracts and supply agreements between producers, feedlots, processors and offtakers.

<summary type="text">From Informal Livestock Corridors to Investable Trade Systems: Accelerating Pastoral Integration under AfCFTA
AU-IBAR
The policy brief proposes a practical 24-month corridor package to formalise Africa’s cross-border pastoral livestock trade and unlock investment. Despite its economic significance, the sector remains weakly integrated into AfCFTA due to fragmented governance, inconsistent SPS controls, and high non-tariff costs.&#13;
&#13;
It recommends fast-tracking 3–5 priority corridors through a minimum viable corridor deal combining corridor governance, risk-based SPS mutual recognition, and market incentives. By improving predictability and aligning incentives, the package aims to reduce transaction costs, attract private investment, strengthen surveillance, and transform informal trade into investable regional systems that enhance food security and rural incomes.

AU-IBAR
Pastoralism contributes 60-80 percent of the continent's meat and up to 50 percent of meat exports, while supporting national economies with 2-7 percent of GDP. Beyond numbers, they provide crucial ecosystem services, sequestering carbon, managing&#13;
water resources, and sustaining life in marginal lands. Yet, despite their immense value, pastoralists remain on the periphery of Africa's economic and development agenda.

The East African newspaper; Kairu, Pauline
The livestock industry is approaching a pivotal moment. Long defined by informal markets, climatic shocks, and subsistence-level production, the sector must now pivot toward structure, sustainability and scale. With rising domestic demand and billion-shilling export potential within reach, the opportunity, and the pressure, to modernise has never been greater. his call for transformation echoed throughout the 2025 Kenya Meat Expo, held on August 6-8, where policy experts, pastoral representatives, private sector leaders, and livestock advocates gathered under the theme, “Driving Sustainable Growth Across the Meat Value Chain”.

<summary type="text">Assessing Kenya’s Livestock Export Gaps: Pre-Benchmarking Analysis towards Namibia Engagement
Allela, Eric; African Pastoral Markets Development Platform; AU-IBAR
This report presents the results of a gap analysis conducted by the Kenyan delegation ahead of a benchmarking visit to Namibia’s livestock sector, facilitated under the African Pastoral Markets Development (APMD) Platform by the AU-IBAR.The analysis identifies critical gaps in Kenya’s livestock development ecosystem and highlights areas where Namibia offers relevant lessons and best practices within the value chain.&#13;
&#13;
Key outcomes indicate that while Kenya has made substantial policy strides, operational challenges persist in value addition, traceability, logistics, climate resilience, and gender inclusion.The findings underscore the value of the visit in shaping Kenya’s livestock transformation agenda and accelerating AfCFTA-aligned reforms of reducing tariff barriers and eradicating non-tariff trade barriers.
